As of January 1, 2006, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requires the amount of trans fat in a serving of food to be listed on all food nutritional labels. Here's what that means to you.
What is Trans Fat?
Trans fatty acid, also known as trans fat, is a monounsaturated fatty acid that:
- Increases "bad" (LDL) cholesterol levels in blood, increasing the risk of heart disease.
- Lowers "good" (HDL) cholesterol, a blood lipid associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.
